An industry moving toward gender equality

Fecha  28-05-21

The Sustainable Development Goals proposed for 2030 recognize closing the gender gap as a fundamental step toward achieving global economic growth and sustainable development. In this sense, empowering women will always have a multiplier effect that benefits our societies as a whole.

We are part of an industry defined by its ability to connect people across the world, create spaces for knowledge-sharing, and foster cultural exchange. However, in light of the SDGs, we must ask ourselves: how much space has truly been opened for women in our industry? Today, we share some reflections on the role women have played in the MICE industry.

According to Event Marketer, about 50 years ago, women’s participation in events was largely limited to supporting roles at vehicle exhibitions. Years later, they began to take on operational roles in event organization. Around 20 years ago, with the rise of experiential marketing, women started to hold more strategic positions within the MICE sector.

It is estimated that over 55% of the events industry workforce is made up of women—a statistic worth highlighting, as it demonstrates the progress made in recent years toward inclusion. However, there is still much work to be done.

Research has consistently shown that gender diversity—and therefore the complementary strengths of men and women—is a key factor in business success. So, we must ask ourselves: what can we do to move toward a more equitable industry?

Here are three ideas from experts in the events industry and gender equality advocates:

1. Make women’s work visible:
According to UFI’s “Women in Exhibitions” Servicios al usuario Report, 85% of women surveyed said it is essential to conduct studies and analyses that highlight the role of women in the industry. This would provide up-to-date data on their participation and help organizations make informed, equity-driven decisions.

2. Build a culture of inclusion and fairness:
According to the consultancy Marshall E-learning, it is vital to create an inclusive culture that is reflected in leadership and language at all organizational levels. This also means creating spaces to regularly review and evaluate policies related to performance, growth opportunities, recognition, and rewards—while ensuring a safe and supportive work environment.

3. Measure progress toward gender equality:
The United Nations, in its “Women’s Empowerment Principles” Servicios al usuario Report, highlights transparency, Servicios al usuario Reporting, and measurement as essential tools for achieving gender equity in companies. These elements help maintain a continuous and conscious commitment to ensuring workplaces where equal opportunities are accessible to everyone.

At Ágora Bogotá, we consistently recognize that women are fundamental to transformation and continuous improvement in every process. Since our beginnings, we have worked alongside outstanding female professionals in the industry whose leadership, dedication, and vision have driven our growth and innovation — always with the shared goal of building a stronger, more equitable country within this key sector that energizes the economy.
